Taylor Swift Live at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre
Taylor Steingold, Student Life Editor
On August 15, Taylor Swift made a stop at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego for her ongoing RED tour. This sold-out show was her first show back in California, which was “awesome” for her, Swift states.
Swift’s RED tour is based off of her latest album RED that was released October 22 of last year. To Taylor Swift, the color red represents her reasons for writing the music she writes about most, which is love. The color appeared everywhere at the concert; from the lights flashing against the stage and audience, the curtains on stage, posters, as well as the fans outfits.
Before Swift took stage, first to take the 11,000 person crowd was country star and former American Idol, Casey James,. James put on a wonderful performance that truly got the crowd up and off their seats. Next up was acoustic single artist Ed Sheeran, who Swift calls her best friend. Sheeran has featured songs with Taylor Swift before so many fans were already fond of him. Not only for that reason, but because Ed Sheeran is known for his expansive vocal ranges and guitar skills. He makes all of his own beats, guitar remedies, and vocal tracks on and off stage.
After patiently waiting, the big moment arrived. As the lights made their way down to the stage, the big Taylor Swift electrical banner was raised from the bottom of the stage to the top.
“My favorite part was when they were pounding the drums with cool lights in them,” said Denise Guerrero, senior at Otay Ranch.
Once they were raised at the highest point of the stage, there the crowd heard Swift’s voice start to sing her kick off song “State of Grace” as her silhouette was on the stage curtain. “But where is Taylor?” many fans may of asked. Then suddenly, the red curtain dropped instantly and there, everyone could see Swift at the top up the stage singing her heart out, making the crowd go wild.
Taylor Swift continued to surprise her fans throughout the entire show. She would run back stage after almost every song quickly and would come out in a new outfit that fit her specific song theme and performance.
“My favorite songs that Taylor played were 22, State of Grace… pretty much all of them!” said Guerrero. During her hit song “22” (also off of her new album), Swift jumped off stage onto a few of her back up dancers shoulders, and was then carried away to the stage at the back of the venue, giving the other side of the audience a chance to have a close up view. There she performed “Fifteen” from her previous album Fearless, and surprised the fans by bringing Ed Sheeran back on stage and performing “Everything Has Changed” which was senior Dianna Jorgenson’s favorite of the night.
“My favorite part of the concert was when Taylor Swift was carried by her back up dancers. My friend, Rosa Miranda and I were able to run down and be close to her for the few songs she performed on the mini stage”, said Jorgenson.
After a few songs on the smaller stage, Swift was lifted onto a stand and was slowly flown across the crowd to meet her way back to the main stage while singing her song “Sparks Fly” from her previous album, Speak Now. After she Swift had done so, she closed up the tour with a good handful of her biggest hits such as “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. When the set ended, Swift, her band, and her back up dancers all took a bow, showing her red for all of San Diego.

1 slice mozzarella cheese
1 small jar tomato sauce
1 Mushroom, sliced
2 slices pepperoni
How To Make It:
1. Cut English muffin in half and put in the toaster. Once toasted, spread 2 tablespoons tomato sauce on top. Add mushrooms and pepperoni slices.
2. Add the slice of cheese on top of sauce and toppings. Place in microwave for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts.
3. Wait for it to cool slightly and eat.
How did the hipster burn his mouth? He ate his pizza muffin before it was cool!

The To-Do List
Jasmine Vaughn, Editor in Chief
It's not very often that a Hollywood-made, teenager, high school comedy gets so many things right, but “The To Do List” does. A killer cast, quality screenplay, and realistically awkward plot are what make director Maggie Carey's debut film one worth watching.
Seemingly just another chapter in a long line of eighties teen romance flicks, The To Do List flips the genre on its head right off the bat.
Aubrey Plaza's character Brandy Klark makes a list of "accomplishments to unlock" if you will, the summer before going off to college. This list includes many different items that ahem, make the movie worthy of its R rating. But contrary to what you'd expect, this is not just another raunchy high school comedy.
Okay, so it's pretty raunchy. But Carey is adamant in her portrayal of the characters in a positive light. Previous films solely focused on guys getting it or girls abstaining, but the gender role reversal in this one is an essential component. Not once is Brandy shamed for her newfound goals, but instead her friends and sister are there to give her advice she desperately needs every step of the way. Then rather than a soft lit, idealized version of real life experiences, the awkward comes out in a genuine way that audiences can find much easier to relate to.
"When I set out to write this, I really wanted to tell an authentic coming of age story from a teenage girl's point of view. I definitely drew on experiences with boys, mostly the most painful and awkward moments," said Carey in a promotional interview.
“To be honest, it's almost like a dirty 'Sixteen Candles.”

The Last of Us
Christopher Morales, Staff Reporter
The Last of Us is Naughty Dog’s latest triple-An action game. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic zombie setting, The Last of Us follows the two protagonists, Joel and Ellie, as they journey through America in an attempt to save what remains of mankind. Does The Last of Us have what it takes to go beyond uncharted territory, or will it crash and burn the way of the bandicoot?
Presentation
The Last of Us throws the player into a demolished version of our modern civilization, taken back by greenery and wildlife. The painstaking amount of attention to the smallest of details shows the immense care and thought put into this game. This makes The Last of Us not only the best looking game from this console generation, but also one of the most aesthetically pleasing game out there today.
Design
Easily one of its strongest aspects, The Last of Us paces its player. Never overwhelming them with too much combat, it allows enough short breaks of exploration to make each encounter memorable. Unlike most other games, it knows how to invest the players with its world and characters before forcing them through a tedious tutorial.
Gameplay
The player is given a choice in approaching combat. They can either go in stealthily, taking down each enemy one at a time, or they can take a more direct approach with whatever arsenal of weapons the player has at their disposal. While the latter sometimes sounds more appealing, doing so would leave the player at a disadvantage in a later encounter considering the scarcity of supplies.
Story
At the center of it all is a thought provoking tale of loss, survival, and the extent one is willing to go for a second chance. What makes this world compelling are the stories found within the environment. Each area contains remnants of people’s previous life before the apocalypse. Personal belonging found in vacant homes, journal entries and notes written by people as their lives are thrown into chaos, and messages spray painted on the walls by survivors in a vain attempt to contact with their lost love ones, create a vivid image in the player’s head and create the illusion of a living breathing world.
But the story is really all about the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Joel, who has adapted to the dog-eat-dog world as a smuggler, must take Ellie to the safety of the rebel group known was the Fireflies. Ellie, who has not known any other way of life, provides an interesting perspective as to how things were, in contrast to the grim way that they are for her. The heart is found in small details, like Joel explaining college football to Ellie, or providing commentary on a movie poster of a film Ellie will most likely never see. This is what really makes their relationship more believable and provides incentive to the player.
The Last of Us is a truly exceptional game. A shining example as to what other video games ought to be. A game with a thoughtful narrative and masterfully created world that will immerse the player from start to end. This game will be played and discussed for decades to come. 5 out of 5 stars.

Percy Jackson : Sea Of Monsters
Bianca Gaeta, A&E Editor
Logan Lerman returns as Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon, in the second installment for the best-selling franchise. In this film, he continues his epic quest to fulfill his destiny, along with his demigod friends, to seek the healing powers of the Golden Fleece.
Sea of Monsters, based on the Rick Riordan young adult novel, weaves Greek mythology with a modern twist. Big names have been casted in this film such as Stanley Tucci as Dionysus, the God of wine and camp director. His witty humor brings his character to life. Messenger to the Gods, Hermes, — a nice cameo by Nathan Fillion — runs the overnight delivery company Olympic Postal Service. His character might have had a small role in the film, but his charm and wit were on full display. Fillion mentions that you can't give up on your family, and the idea that family is everything is the strong message of the story.
Something the fans of the books will enjoy about this film is that director Thor Freudenthal made the plot line much truer to the books. This is especially compared to The Lightning Thief, which had little to almost nothing of the storyline put into the movie, and ruined the storyline for the rest of the series.
What fans may not like about this movie is that the special effects do not look realistic at all. The monsters in this film were CGI monsters that looked too fake, due to a lack of production value in the movie’s graphics budget. The effects are most evident with Tyson, Percy's cyclops half-brother: his eye is so animated it was computerized.
However faithful an adaptation may be, a movie based on a book is never going to be perfect. Though there is a lot wrong with the Percy Jackson movies, people view these mediums differently. Unless they’ve done a real injustice to the book and destroyed it, there’s no problem to see books as books and movies as movies and enjoy them for what they are. In this particular case, I highly recommend watching the film, demigods!

Too Weird to Save Rock and Roll: The Return of Your Middle School Favorites
Jasmine Vaughn, Editor in Chief
Breaking the rules is the name of the game for rock and roll bands: Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy. It seems like no two fans can agree on exactly what genre these headliners fall under. However, the overall reaction seems to be positively ecstatic over their return to the touring and album-dropping world.
On April 19, the two groups announced dates for the "Save Rock and Roll" tour. This happened just three days after Fall Out Boy's album release of the same name, and was followed up three months later with Panic!'s announcement of their own new record. "Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!" is set for release on October 8.
These two bands are distinct but thoroughly connected. Both on the same record label, both with the same producer, both formed by some unlikely guys far from rock stardom.
ll out boy influence each “They’ve always been similar in their style and in their audience. The point where their distinctions become pronounced is when Fall Out Boy continues down a pop rock/emo sound, while Panic! At The Disco experiments with a mellow baroque rock style,” said Rosa Miranda, Otay Ranch senior and long time fan of both bands.
However, since the punk rock eyeliner era has ended for both, it's a very different experience listening to the new albums. New influences mean new sounds, especially with guest artists on "Save Rock and Roll" like Elton John, Courtney Love, Big Sean, and 2Chainz. Bassist Pete Wentz says the title is very much tongue in cheek, an idea lost on many critics.
"When people start talking about rock ‘n’ roll, that’s the thing you’re not supposed to ever do. When fans try to define it, it makes everyone act funny." said Wentz in a Rolling Stones interview.
As for P!ATD's new album "Too Weird", two new music videos prove that they're never really the same band twice. Released songs like "Miss Jackson" and "This Is Gpel" hint at a very pop rock direction, echoing the fast pace of many tracks on "Rock and Roll". The ridiculous album title is pulled from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", and the style reflects the Vegas atmosphere.
"
People go there to lose themselves in the moment, and drop their guard, and it hit me in a way. Like, 'Wow, I want to do that. I want to make music like that, that moves people, that's a party, that makes you feel good,'" said Brendon Urie, lead singer of Panic! in an interview with MTV.
With seventeen dates all over the country for their fall arena tour, both bands have a lot to look forward to and so do their fans. The "Save Rock and Roll" tour will be coming to a city near you on September 22 at the Valley View Casino center.

FInd Yourself IN Oz
"Oz The Great And Powerful" Movie Review
Leilani Luna, Photo Editor
April 12, 2013
The classic story of the Wizard of Oz has inspired a new tale that hit theaters a week before spring break. The original story holds that Dorothy gets sucked into a tornado and wakes in the land of Oz; she ventures on a journey with a brainless scarecrow, a heartless Tin man, and a cowardly lion. The basic premise of this unique film is that Dorothy journey’s to “the great Wizard” turns out to be farce. Basically, the Wizard is not a true “Wizard”. This information is crucial to understanding the plot of the movie in theaters at the moment.
In “Oz: the Great and Powerful”, stars include James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams. A small-time magician, Oscar Diggs (Franco), is swept away by a tornado to a land of feud by three witches. The film is based off the original story of L. Frank Baum, but serves as a prequel to the story of Oz. Much like the original, this movie begins in black and white and transitions to color once the protagonist enters Oz. The major differences in the stories lie in the backgrounds of the characters. In “Oz the Great and Powerful”, you learn the origin of the witches and you actually see the Wicked Witch of the East before Dorothy’s house lands on her.
“A lot of The Wizard of Oz made sense after watching Oz,” said Sarah Medina, senior. “You find out where Oz came from and what his character is like.”
Though this prequel wasn’t as highly recognized as critics on the rotten tomatoes website might have anticipated, some students at Otay found it visually intriguing. “I particularlyliked the graphics and the actors in the film,” said Medina.
This film is something intended appropriate for all ages (rated PG), therefore it’s safe to take younger siblings and still enjoy the romance in the film.

"Spring Breakers" Movie Review
Jasmine Vaughn, Features Editor
April 12, 2013
"Spring break forever" is the anthem of this dark and edgy comedy that came out on March 22. Boasting a star studded line up and an unorthodox indie director, Spring Breakers is setting the bar high early for movies this year.
As soon as promotional pictures and trailers hit the internet, this film spread like glitter on a dance floor. Teasers show best friends Brit, Candy, Cotty, and Faith commiserating over the lack of excitement in their lives. When the girls finally get their hands on the money to go out and party during spring break, they do so by robbing a restaurant "like it's a videogame". When they land in trouble, a gangster named Alien bails them out to do some dirty work.
With stars like James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, Spring Breakers is definitely big. Official press releases state that the director "had purposely collected a group of well-known young actresses with a similar reputation in Hollywood." For some, this reputation has much to do with a past on the Disney Channel at a young age. The dramatic shift in roles for these young actresses brings more depth to the movie, with its wild messages of losing control. In reality, the girls aren't going wild for the heck of it. Some see the movie as a rebellious break with their past, while really it can be seen as a mature turning point. After success with children's television, and successes in other films, it's about time for these starlets to stop being lumped together with Disney so they can continue to move on to bigger and better things.
Critics and commentators that slam this casting choice should consider going back to "the good old days" and staying there. The raunchiness of the characters in this movie proves to be much more than fan service. It's part of the symbolism of the movie, of spring break, of the actresses themselves. Just looking at the wild style of the plot isn't seeing the more significant commentary of the "spring break forever" lifestyle.
Though it’s his most mainstream release to date, Spring Breakers still promises to carry much of the trademark style of cult director, Harmony Korine. This directing is common in his independent film award winners like "Gummo" and "Julien Donkey-Boy". In the past, his movies "rarely have a linear plot and are often made up of pieces of events that are highly symbolic and/or metaphorical," says IMDB. This leads to audiences either loving his work as a piece of art or disliking it for its complexity.
When Spring Breakers comes out, moviegoers will make their judgment clear. Audiences can look forward to a thrilling ride through a spring break that they'll never forget.

Pokémon X & Y
(Internet Source)

An all-new 3D Pokémon adventure packed with never-before-seen Pokémon will launch worldwide in October 2013.Both games were revealed during a worldwide announcement by Satoru Iwata through Nintendo Direct at 8 pm JST, on January 8, 2013. The game will be released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.Unlike any other Pokémon game in the main series, Pokémon X and Y feature a completely three dimensional style of gameplay, and 3D modeled characters and creatures are used, rather than sprites which has been done since Generation I. The battle system features more lively reactions to the attacks, such as when a Pokémon is being hit and when a Pokémon uses an attack.
There are currently six confirmed Pokémon for Pokémon X and Y, including three starter Pokémon, two legendary Pokémon, and an eevee evolution. The starters include Chespin, the grass starter, Fennekin, the fire starter, and Froakie, the water starter. The two legendary Pokémon include Xerneas and Yveltal. Xerneas’ and Yveltal’s type is still unknown. All that is known about them is their height and weight and the fact that Xerneas is in the shape of an x and Yveltal is in the shape of a y. The eevee evolution is named Sylveon. Sylveon’s type is also unknown. But a guide to eevee evolutions is provided with eevee in the middle and with arrows pointing towards its evolutions. Across from one of eevee’s evolutions is its weakness, for example, Glaceon, the ice type Pokémon, is weak against Flareon, the fire type Pokémon. Across Sylveon is Jolteon, the electric type Pokémon, which suggests that Sylveon is a flying type Pokémon.
There is still a lot that isn’t known about Pokémon X and Y, such as the EV Yield of the new Pokémon, how many new Pokémon there are going to be, and what kind of changes there will be. More information will be released as the game is developed, so all we can do is wait for the games release in October.

Lydia - Devil
Album Review
Lydia - Devil album cover
Taylor Steingold, Staff Reporter
April 12, 2013
“Happy are we, in our own world”? Yes! Indie rock band, Lydia is back with a brand new, breathtaking album called Devil. This ten song record is full of songs not only their previous fans will adore, but new listeners too. Whether it is a simple melody or reciting lyrics, almost everyone can enjoy Devil.
AbolutePunk (a popular online music review page) rated Devil an 8.5 out of a possible score of 10. Most fans had no apprehension before the release of this new album. Lucky they didn’t, because Lydia ended up making it on the top 10 albums selling on iTunes just one day after the release date. An 8.5 by reviewers can’t come close to the band’s fans opinions. ITunes proved this theory.
Devil is filled with soft, breezy tunes, but also some blatant guitar riffs as well. First up on the album is “The Exit”. The song starts off with a piano intro, and then the symphony begins. “The Exit” is one of those catchy, relaxing songs perfect for a spring/summer weather feel, also, a perfect intro song for the rest of this exclusive album.
Lydia released this album March 19th of this year. This was a huge day for the band and its fans. Later in the evening after the leak, Lydia posted on Twitter “Blown away”. The band was (still is) amazed on how much its fans love the new album. Any musician would be more than contempt with a fan base like their own. Fans all rush to respond to the band’s tweet and tell them just how much they appreciate the new album and their music in general. One fan responded, “Today I can honestly say that I am a Devil worshiper. Thank You”. Not long after, Lydia thanked the fan by re-tweeting their comment. There are many more where that came from though!
There shall be no remorse giving this album a good listen. It is almost guaranteed everyone that has a heart for rock n’ roll will appreciate Devil. The title of Lydia’s new album is almost a contradiction. Even though it has a demon name, all songs one through ten sound like angels. Be sure to purchase Devil soon to find out for yourself. According to the band, it’s “still trying to find that devil” and it thinks it’s “getting close” to it, and you could be it. Be sure to become one of the many Devil worshipers and purchase the new album on iTunes now!

THE WORLD'S FIRST FAMILY
"THE CROODS" MOVIE REVIEW
(Internet Source)
Daejah Anderson, Managing & Copy Editor
April 12, 2013
On a bustling 5 dollar Tuesday at the Regal Theatre, tickets were sold out for The Croods, an animated film by DreamWorks studios, released on March 22. Luckily my friends and I were able to squeeze in and watch the film.
This movie is about a family of cavemen who have lived their entire lives in a cave, hiding from the dangerous world in hopes of keeping each other alive. The Croods family includes Grug ,the father (Nicolas Cage), Ugga the mother, Gran the grandma, Sandy the baby, Tuk the son, and Eep the oldest daughter (Emma Stone). Eep portrays the cave-girl version of the average teenager who desperately wants to break away from her family and find adventure. However, her views clash with her father Grug’s mentality of avoiding anything that could lead their family to extinction. After losing their cave to an earthquake, the Croods are faced with a treacherous journey to find a new home. At the same time, trying to beat what seems like “the end of the world” with the help of a few unexpected friends.
Something that I enjoyed about this film was the way the movie makers portrayed life during the pre-historic age. The scenery was very colorful and lively. The animals created in the movie had a unique twist on the kind of animals that exist today. In addition, I felt that the features of the characters’ appearance were an appropriate image to put in children’s minds of what cavemen look like. The CGI (computer generated images) used in this film as a whole were great quality and kept me drawn in from start to finish. I would say that this is definitely a step up from DreamWorks' other film that took place during the prehistoric-era, Ice Age.
Not only was the movie appealing to the eye, but it was also fun to see the characters go on their adventure to find a new home. Given that the Croods didn’t know much about the outer word, it was funny to watch them encounter new things like wearing a pair of shoes. The family was also put through many challenges that they had to overcome which kept the movie entertaining the whole way through. Whether it’s about a relationship between parents and kids, living life, or enjoying the time spent on earth, this movie hit a layer of notes and had great visuals to back it up.
Overall, The Croods is a very fun, family friendly movie that audiences of any age could enjoy.

An Author On Campus
Andrea Ferragotti posing with her book
Alina Sheikh, Staff Reporter
February 13, 2013
Since her years as a young child, she has been creatively developing characters and plots in her mind. This year, this Otay student has published her first book at the age of sixteen. Starting her education in Texas, and moving to San Diego her sophomore year, she has been working on her story for most of her life.
“I’ve been working on my book since seventh grade. I was a really weird five-year old, and I sort of had imaginary friends, which are the immortals in my book. I basically just created this plot line for them over the years,” said the young author.
Even as a young child, she would write down things about her beloved characters, The Swans. As she grew older and developed, so did her characters; by middle school she officially decided to put pen to paper. After four years of writing, she finally finished the full length novel last October.
That fall, she decided to send out her story to publishers, not knowing exactly what to expect. Shortly after, she was contacted by Xlibris Publishers, with an offer to publish her book.
“They asked me some questions about what kind of process I wanted to go through, and since I didn’t have an agent, I had to pay for some of the process. They edited it for grammar, which was difficult because some of my characters talk a little weird, so I had to go back and fix the whole thing. Then they showed templates with different fonts for my book, and how it would look at the start of every chapter, and the whole process took until January,” said Ferragotti.
This year, Ferragotti finally released her sci-fi book, Immortals’ Angels, to the public. Immortals’ Angels follows the story of a girl that meets a family of immortals, the Swans. Since that moment everything is turned upside down for her because she discovers that she too is an immortal. Now she must figure out a way to save the Swans from eternal damnation, because her life is also on the line.
Immortals’ Angles by Andrea Ferragotti is available online at Xlibris.com, Amazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com.
“I feel like I’ve made my mark on the world, and also really nervous about how it’s going to turn out. Buy my book and I hope you guys like it!” said Ferragotti.

Bond is back: skyfall
Skyfall movie poster (Internet Source)
Jasmine Vaughn, Features Editor
December 12, 2012
This October marked the 50th anniversary of the second highest grossing film series of all time. James Bond struck a fire that led to a streak of spy movies in the sixties and continues to burn bright in the latest movie installment, Skyfall. While the movie followed the classic styles that Bond fans have come to love, it also set up a new layout for the James Bond legacy.
After the initial chase scene excitement, it soon becomes clear this is more than just another action packed Bond film. After faking his death for the 15th time in the series, Bond's mission is to save MI6 after a cyber-terrorism attack. The attack was aimed at M, the head of the agency, who has been pressured to retire after her significance in the organization is questioned. Both 007 and M are shown to be suffering from decaying status, but are charged with overcoming the odds in order to save the day.
The modern, relevant circumstances of Skyfall answer questions of Bond's social significance as a character in the current age. It also opens the movie to focus on equal parts emotion and action. Unlike past 007 movies made up of explosions and gunfire galore, Skyfall is able to mix significant character development with its epic action scenes.
Attention to detail and visual subtleties are what set Skyfall apart from its predecessors. The stunning intro art sequence is even more impressive than usual with arguably the best Bond theme so far sung by Adele. References to the classics are slipped in, like the wine James drinks from 1962, the year the first Bond film was released.
Skyfall has much in common with Daniel Craig's other two Bond movies, despite it being a separate story from the rest. Each of his films have progressed towards gritty emphasis on the story itself, and a shift from the fantastical circumstances previously faced by the 007 portrayed by the other five actors. This is the first movie not be based on an original Ian Fleming, which allowed the writers to go deeper than before. In an effort to develop the James Bond character from his more chauvinistic past, this is the first movie in which his female love interests are referred to as Bond Women instead of Bond Girls. All of this has helped the smooth transition from the original to the modern, while keeping the idealistic class of James Bond intact.
A transition can also be found in the film’s major villain. Craig's villains so far have been rather sub par in their evil doing. However, this installment is unique with its presentation of the big bad. For one thing, cyber-terrorism is a much more realistic threat than world takeover by villains with evil facial hair. Skyfall's villain Silva, played by Javier Bardem, brings an impressive darkness to his role as 007's target. He goes beyond the surface of previous antagonists, and has many critics calling him the best villain yet.
After 22 movies and fifty years, it's quite an achievement to keep such a well loved series in artistic quality. Overall, it's an interesting shift from previous installments. Dedicated Bond aficionados and new fans alike will be impressed with the direction Skyfall is going in, and will eagerly await the next installment in 2014.

ONe Direction: take me home

After the outstanding international success of One Direction’s debut album, Up All Night, the British-Irish boy band released its sophomore album, Take Me Home, to North American “Directioners” on November 13, 2012. Since the announcement of their second album on August 29th, preorders of the album became available on September 3rd, and quickly began to top the iTunes charts even before the album’s official release.
After much anticipation, fans of One Direction were able to get their hands on the band’s new album, and the results were incredible. In only the first week of Take Me Home’s release, the album received the third-biggest opening week sales of the year with 540,000 sales in the U.S. alone and over one million copies worldwide. Take Me Home also reached top 10 on iTunes in several countries, only within its first 48 hours since the release.
The album has received mostly positive reviews, as it is described as the “ultimate pop album”. Directioners can expect more personal songs in the Take Me Home album, as the guys of One Direction have written three of the songs on the regular album, and four on the deluxe edition. This album, much like their first album, offers fun, upbeat pop songs, guaranteed to be stuck in your head all day.
After their lead single of the second album made “Billboard chart history” with 341,000 copies sold in only the first week of the single’s release, "Live While We're Young" received the biggest opening week single sales for a non-US artist. Their second single was “Little Things”, and the third single “Kiss You” music video is set to be released sometime this month.

Movie Review: Red dawn

The ever lovable brother from the hit Nickelodeon T.V. show Drake & Josh: Josh Peck. The heart throb Avenger who commands the thunder from down under: Chris Hemsworth. The tribute from District 12 in the 74th annual Hunger Games: Josh Hutcherson. These memorable actors play renegade teenagers in the fight to keep their home from being taken over by North Korean communism in the 2012 remake of the 1984 original Red Dawn. The boys co-star with Adrianna Palicki, Isabel Lucas, and Jeffery Dean Morgan in this unbelievable movie for the fight to stay home.
In this remake, Jed Eckert(Hemsworth) returns home to see his family after six years of serving as a marine. When he comes back, his brother Matt (Peck) does not welcome him back with open arms and more of a cold shoulder but nevertheless, Jed is determined to make a connection with his brother. However, they’re reunion is cut short when North Korean soldiers parachute from the sky and begin to take over their neighborhood along with all of America. They try to escape their forces along with friends Robert (Hutcherson), Daryl Jenkins (Connor Cruise), Toni Walsh (Palicki), and Erica Mason (Lucas). With this new found team of friends, they band together as the renegade freedom fighters the Wolverines to defeat the war general Cho and take back their homes.
One quote that makes an impact with the audience is when Jed Eckert works to encourage his fellow team mates by saying the following: “I am gonna fight. It's easier for me, because I've done it before. The rest of you are gonna have a tougher choice. I'm not gonna sell it, it's too ugly for that. These soldiers don't want to be here. For them this is some place, for us it's our home. When you fight in your backyard it makes just a little more sense, and hurts a little less.”
This movie was filled with explosions and action and every bit of warfare tactics the director could fit in. The audience was completely glued to the movie screen and no one dared look away or else they would have missed more impacting than the last. The placement of the camera in every scene was always in the perfect place from the descending of the soldiers to the riots of the Wolverines. Another aspect of this movie was the music. The music choice of this movie can be explained in a simple context: this is war. With the battle scenes flying on the screen left and right the music fit perfectly to the last cord. The audience could feel the suspense and the adrenaline coming off the characters. It was truly enthralling.
Overall, this movie deserves a good four stars and although some critics have been a bit over the top with the reviews due to this movie being a remake, I believe that this movie was excellent for this generation of movie goers.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Fandom
Movie Poster (Internet Source)

"From the smallest beginnings come the greatest legends," reads the tagline for the epic fantasy adventure The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The precedent of the world famous Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the long awaited film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's first children's book.
Nine years have passed since the third Lord of the Rings film was released, and fans have been eagerly looking forward to this installment. Along with Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood continuing their roles from the previous films, The Hobbit also stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. The film follows the hobbit, Bilbo, as he travels with the wizard Gandalf and a troupe of thirteen dwarves. Their destination is the Lonely Mountain where they must retrieve a stolen treasure guarded by the terrible dragon, Smaug. The Hobbit novel is set to be divided into three movies: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively.
There has been some controversy among fans over the decision to divide the book into another trilogy. Some are accusing director Peter Jackson of having a profit driven focus in this movie. However, it seems like the majority is too busy being excited for the movie to worry about it.
“Peter Jackson has a love for the series, and if he wants to make more movies that's fine with me," said Ian Perrett, junior at Otay Ranch and long-time fan.
Before Tolkien was gathering a worldwide fan base, his books were required reading in many high school classrooms. Published in 1937, The Hobbit was in English classrooms long before it was on the bookshelves of young fans.
"When I was in high school in 11th grade, my English teacher forced us to read this book. I didn't know anything about [the book], but I was so throughout enchanted by it," said Maria Saiki, English teacher.
This classic novel has been around for 75 years and has impacted generations of culture throughout that period. New fans and old fans, young and old, have all shown a deep connection to these books. Now that the new movies are coming out, even more moviegoers are sure to fall in love with this timeless tale of fantasy.
"The characters are still great, and it doesn't really matter when it was written, it's still a great book. It's a classic that everyone should read," said Perrett. Fans like him everywhere are excited to see the upcoming blockbuster movie when it journeys to theaters December 14.

the twilight saga: breaking dawn part 2
Vampire-human child, Renesmee (Internet Source)

December 12, 2012
After the long awaited final installment of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn part two hit the screens on November 16. Although the movie release date was the 16th, hundreds of Twihards arrived to their local theaters on November 15 to catch the movie’s midnight release. In the final movie, Bella has finally gotten what she has longed for, to be a vampire. After her almost fatal childbirth, she awakes to embrace her newborn half human, half vampire, baby Renesmee. As the Volturi begin to warm up to the new Cullen couple, they receive news of Renesmee, after a mistaken accusation by Irina (a cousin of the Cullen clan), who believes she is an “immortal child”. Now the Cullens must join together with other vampire clans to help prove to the Volturi that Renesmee is not harmful. The Volturi however, will not go down without a fight. In this final movie, viewers can expect more action, and “hold on to your seat” plot twists. It is fair to say that the Twilight saga saved its best for last with this final chapter of one of the most beloved series today. Not only did the actors step up to the plate with their performances, but the overall effects of the movie make it the must see movie of the season. Edward and Bella’s romance, vampire-wolf action, the excitement of meeting Renesmee, and of course the fact that this is the last of the Twilight saga (I know, I can’t believe it either!), has caused over excitement for Twihards everywhere. Even for movie goers who have not closely followed the series, Breaking Dawn part two is a must see for everyone!

Gift giving is one of the one of the joys of the holiday season. For many, it’s nice to take part in the gift giving experience. These are some ideas for students to shop savvy for this savvy holiday season.
Gift Ideas for Mom
If your mom is outgoing and extravagant, or if she likes simple things, she will appreciate these gift ideas. Fuzzy, warm and simple to find, house slippers are sure to warm your mom’s heart and her feet. Some great places to find house slippers are Kohl’s and Target. Another idea for mom could be bath amenities. Bath and Body Works, and The Body Shop are great places to find all your bath needs this holiday season. Gift Ideas for Dad |
Think of what father likes: it may be fishing; it may be football, or maybe soccer. Where can you buy all the quick and easy gifts without having to travel very far? Try Sports Authority or Big 5 Sporting Good, and if your father isn't into sports, you can always go the easy route by getting your dad something for his car or power tools.
Gift Ideas for Siblings
Put your sibling rivalry aside and get along during the holidays. Gift cards are a small inexpensive and foolproof way of saying “I love you, but I didn’t know what to buy you.” If you’re shopping for a teenage girl try Forever 21, if you’re shopping for young male try Game Stop, and youngsters under 12 try Target or Toys 'R Us. Be sure to base the gift off their interests and that you keep in mind their age to make their gift appropriate.
No matter what you end up getting your family, remember it’s the thought that counts!

Get Pitch slapped

On October 5, the film Pitch Perfect was pitch slapped in theatres across the nation. Starring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, and Rebel Wilson this movie has comedy, music, and romance.
Before watching this movie I did not expect much nor did I plan on seeing it. The next thing I knew I was sitting in the AMC theatre and Pitch Perfect quickly became one of my favorite movies this year.
The characters’ performances were very pleasing in the movie. Beca, Anna Kendrick’s character, is a freshman in college and is passionate about music. In an effort to “fit in” with college life, Beca’s character develops once she is recruited to the all-girls singing group, The Bellas. The mix of personalities and talents in the a capella group make the movie very entertaining. One of the more unique characters goes by the name “Fat Amy”, played by Rebel Wilson. Rebel Wilson’s signature sense of humor plays a huge role in the comical side of the movie.
In addition to the brilliant characters, the plot line was another thing that kept me wanting more. In the film, the Bellas take on the challenge of winning a series of a capella competitions. Some of the obstacles they face are recruiting new members, and improving from past on-stage disasters. The rivalry between the female and male singing groups made the movie much more entertaining. Pitch Perfect also does a phenomenal job in balancing the right amount of comedy and romance. It gives the movie an opportunity to reach out to a much wider audience who has different taste in movies.
Overall, I highly recommend that people watch this movie. The characters will make you laugh, the music will keep you entertained, and the plot will keep you intrigued. Be prepared to get Pitch slapped.

show choir
Full Effect at the annual Halloween Show

Show choir at Otay Ranch, contrary to popular belief, is not like the televised version media has portrayed. “Glee” isn’t exactly the mirror of what “Full Effect” is. Some, however, aren’t familiar with what “show choir” is to begin with.
“What is show choir,” said Caren Briones, vice president of Full Effect, “show choir is a choir that dances not a dance group that sings.”
“We’re basically a choir that dances but we place more emphasis on the choral aspect of show choir than the dancing aspect,” said senior and Mustang Chorale president, Marco Aquinde.
Though its establishment was as early as 2005, its name was given in 2006 as “Full Effect”. Composed of approximately twenty-five students, this choir competes beginning around second semester and it has roughly six or seven shows throughout the year ranging from the Past and Present Show, to the Spring Concert.
“Our goals for this year are to hopefully win at least three competitions we go to this year and to earn superior rankings in any festival we choose to participate in,” said Aquinde.
“We have three songs that we have to do in our sets [for competition] which are acapellas and ballads, and another powerful song,” said Briones, “we usually choose one or two ‘mainstream songs’ and acapellas are usually ‘choral-ish’.”
Show choir can be taken as a visual and performing arts elective, however “you do not have to be in the class to be a part of it,” according to Show Choir president, Francis Lara. “You can just be a part of it after school and go to after school practices.”
For those students that are interested in joining, experience is not necessary but it is recommended to have some experiencing with singing.
“We’re planning to have more auditions for show choir in November,” said Lara. “Basically we teach you a dance for maybe four-eight counts and we’ll teach you a vocal to sing with that dance and you have a day or so to process it. Then the next day you perform for a panel of experienced choir members and the director [Ms. Adviento].”
Though this upcoming year might be a challenge, according to the vice presidents, with support from the student body, and the improvement of their team, the year will be successful.
“Show choir is a really good experience and you get to bond with them a lot. You get really close to a lot of people,” said Lara.

Jordan's

The burger joint that took nearly three years to finally open turned out to be worth the wait. The parking is on a street, so not many parking spaces may be open for drivers. When I took a step inside of the restaurant for the first time, the atmosphere immediately caught my eye; orange and blue theme, unique seats and tables, and a smooth architectural style that I won’t forget. The place was small and simplistic. There was a T.V. posted near the ceiling for customers to watch, and outdoor seats surrounded the outside area. When I came here afterschool on a Monday, there were only about five people eating.
Right when I walked in the employees acknowledged me with a smile and was prepared to take my order. He didn’t have an annoyed look that other employees at these places have when they’re waiting for me to select my order, and waited patiently with a smile. When I placed my order, he smiled and told me I selected a good choice and efficiently went on to give me my receipt.
The menu was posted up in big letters on the left, and on it you could find an enormous variety of burgers, from the avocado burger to the Philadelphia burger. Various different hot dogs can also be found on the menu, in addition with several different types of fries and sides. The prices were fairly high for a burger place at around five to six dollars a burger, but the portion sizes were satisfying.
I noticed that there weren’t many seats inside the restaurant itself, but there were many café tables outside the restaurant. I didn’t mind it, but I knew that I wouldn’t want to come and eat at Jordan’s during the winter.
I noticed right away that they made these burgers with real ingredients because it took the allotted time for actual burgers, unlike the ones in fast food chains, to be cooked and ready to be served. When I bit into the avocado burger, the delicious and clean taste instantly met the standards I had for this place.
This burger place is located in the middle of East Palomar Street, next to McMillin Elementary School. Any Mustang looking for a fairly pricey but tasty burger should definitely consider giving the place a try.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
Bella Swan (Internet Source)
Alina Sheikh, Staff Reporter
September 19, 2012
The epic love story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan comes to an end in the final installment of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. After the birth of their half vampire, half human daughter, Renesmee, the Cullens must join forces with other vampire clans to protect their daughter from the Volturi.
“I am really excited to see Bella as a vampire, and really see her in action” said Ms. Bryan- Gonzalez, counselor at Otay Ranch High School.
In this final chapter of the trilogy, Twilight fans can expect an action packed romantic drama.
The Twilight saga movies have grossed an estimated two billion dollars worldwide, and the final movie is expected to break box office records. Dampening the release of the last movie, however, is the recent breakup of the star couple. Their off screen breakup has produced a bittersweet response from Twilight fans to their onscreen marriage.
“Once I watched Twilight I fell in love with the whole story, but I am sad that there are no longer any more movies,” Natalia Campos, an Otay Twilight fan.
Many Mustangs at the Ranch are also excited about the long awaited continuation to the Twilight Saga.
“I extremely enjoy them, and I highly anticipate the upcoming movie, and I hope to go to the premiere” said Briana Hooks, a Twilight fan at the Ranch.
“I really enjoy the movies because they’re very suspenseful and entertaining, and I am kind of sad that there are not going to be any more movies” said Twiheart Cynthia Perez.

Slender

The more you know about him, the faster he’ll hunt you down.
“Slender” is a suspense game that tests a player’s strongholds more than his or her intelligence. Defenseless, players must find their way through a forest in the dark and find eight papers that foreshadow their future. Find every paper, or be hunted by the Slender Man?
Players start the game with only a flashlight and the ability to sprint for a short amount of time. The papers are spread in the forest, forcing players to take a terrifying tour across the area. The locations of the papers are at various landmarks. The landmarks include a silo, large rocks, cross walls, a group of cut trees, a dark tunnel, an abandoned building, rusted tankers, a giant tree, a single tanker, and clearing with two vehicles. If the player stays in the area too long, the Slender Man will pop out from behind the trees. If he is in their line of sight, their screen will become fuzzy. The players will have to face away from the monster and run. If they catch the player from behind, the player will be forced to turn around. Game over.
As each page is collected, the difficulty of the game gets harder. The monster stalks faster, making players search more frantically. In addition to the level of difficulty rising, the music gets louder and more suspenseful. The suspense will destroy players mentally as they try to gather the courage to move on.
The Slender Man is depicted as an abnormally tall man without a face wearing a suit. He also is known to have tentacle-like appendages. It is said that he stalks his targets for years at a time, torturing his prey by wearing down their mental perseverance. This legend has targeted anyone, from children to adults. If a child sees the Slender Man at an early age, the monster will trail the victim throughout his or her childhood and finally impale the kid through a tree. The victim will be unaware of the ‘myth’ until it’s too late.
If players have the guts to brave this beast, feel free to pick up the game. It is completely free and can be downloaded from the internet. The game becomes a little bit more bearable with a group of friends. The experience, however, is much more thrilling when you play alone.
In reality, the Slender Man does not exist (maybe). He is a legend created by users of the “Something Awful” forums. In 2009, a Photoshop contest was held, releasing false sightings of the Slender Man in photos.
Just a note: since you’ve read this, you are probably on his “to-do” list now.

Movie Review: The Expendables 2
(Internet Source)

September 19, 2012
The Expendables 2 is an action filled movie with guns, knives, and references to many of the actor’s former movies. With guns blazing in every other scene, action fans will feel at home, but non-action fans should keep low expectations.
The Expendables 2 was released in the United States on August 17, 2012. The opening weekend of the movie made $28,597,370, according to the IMDB website. The movie proved as successful as its predecessor by netting over almost $69,000,000 as of September 2, 2012.
The Expendables 2’s cast is filled with stars from other action movies, including Rambo, The Transporter, and Die Hard. The main cast includes Sylvester Stallone, playing the leader Barney Ross, Jason Statham, playing the second-in-command, Lee Christmas, and Bruce Willis, playing a CIA agent by the name of Church. The newest addition to the group is a young man called “Bill the Kid,” played by Liam Hemsworth. The main antagonist, called Vilain, is played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. Vilain’s right hand man, Hector, is played by Scott Adkins. Jet Li, playing the character Ying Yang, had a very short appearance during the introduction of the movie. Chuck Norris, playing the lone wolf soldier Booker, made random appearances to support the Expendables when they were in deep trouble.
During a mission forced onto the Expendables, the newest recruit, Bill the Kid, was killed. The rookie wanted to quit his life as a gun-for-hire and live with his wife, but lost his life on his on the job. Barney Ross, the leader of the Expendables, had high hopes for the recruit and now wants revenge for the young man’s death. In addition to the loss of a member, the mission objective, the location of military grade plutonium, was taken by an enemy mercenary group called the “Sangs,” led by Vilain. The Expendables must stop the Sangs from obtaining the plutonium. Vilain plans to black market the plutonium for profit to private buyers.
The Expendables 2 is a decent action movie with enough funny scenes to keep the audience attracted, but the script for the movie was weak. Most conversations between characters ended with a reference to their respective film or quick joke. If an audience member doesn’t understand certain dialogue, they can watch the movie where the actor was from to get the joke. As said before, action fans will get their money’s worth in this movie. On the other hand, non-action fans shouldn’t hold high expectations. The plot is simply about a group wanting to exact revenge while attempting to keep potential weapons from evil hands - it has been done before. Without the dynamic fight scenes, the audience would lose interest. If a movie fan wants to get into action movies, starting with the Expendables 2 is not a good idea. Overall, the movie was amusing and will not leave spectators displeased.

Tips for Looking Your Best (Without Makeup)
Ryan Corpus, Columnist
September 19, 2012
Here are some tips for both males and females for cheaper and easier alternatives to look their best. I advise you to read these tips with an open mind as some may sound unusual.
For a Cleaner face - Grab some mouth wash, paper towels, and moisturizing lotion. This may sound odd, but give this a chance. Take the paper towel and pour the mouth wash generously on the paper towel. Take the towel and rub in gentle circles for about 30 seconds. After rubbing, take a different paper towel and damp it in warm water, rinse your face, and pat down any areas that feel sticky. Take your favorite moisturizing lotion and apply all over your face, but not too much because your face will become oily. Also, don’t wash your face with mouthwash every day. Use this tip about twice a week and wash your face regularly every other day. As seen in Readers Digest and http://Gomestic.com
For pimples and black heads - For pimples, take any toothpaste and apply it to where the pimples are and leave it for about 30 to 50 minutes. You don’t want to dry out your skin; once you’re done the pimples should be gone or significantly smaller. For black heads, take the toothpaste and spread it around the nose, and make sure that you thin out the layers so the toothpaste looks almost transparent, and wash it off with warm water in about 50 minutes. The warm water, however, will open your pores and let bacteria and other pathogens in. To get rid of this problem, take a clean ice cube and rub it on the area where you rinsed your face. As seen in http://www.Acne.org
For whiter teeth- Put a pinch of baking soda on your toothpaste and brush for 3 to 5 minutes. Do this once a week because baking soda can remove your enamel on your teeth. For extra strength, put the baking soda in a strawberry, rub it around until it makes a paste like substance and apply on your toothbrush and brush to your heart’s content.
For shinier and softer hair - Take a raw egg and separate the egg yolk and the egg whites. Now put the egg yolk in a cup and put in a handful of your favorite shampoo and mix the two (for extra strength you can put olive oil in it too). Bring the substance to the shower and wash your hair with warm water. Rinse with cold water and watch as your hair becomes locked with its natural oils and your hair becomes softer as a result. As seen in many online blogs and http://www.Dailyglow.com.
Softer lips - You’ll need honey, a spoon, a towel, and maybe some sugar. Warm up a teaspoon of honey for about 30 seconds or less, and make sure the honey is lukewarm. Rub the honey on your lips, and leave it there for 3 minutes. Take your towel and damp it in water and remove the honey. I recommend doing this right before you sleep, so you wake up with soft lips every morning. For extra strength, scrub your lips with sugar while rinsing off the excess honey with warm water.
For puffy and dark eye circles - You’ll need a cucumber, water, one cup, a freezer, and two spoons. Cut up the cucumber and put it in the cup of water and leave it for about 30 minutes until the water looks a little green or the color of the cucumber. Dip the spoons in the water and take them out, but make sure the spoons have some liquid in them and put them in the freezer. Leave it over night and then take the spoons out in the morning and put them on your eyes for 5 minutes or longer and this should make your eyes less puffy and brighter.
Results may vary.
